Blog Number Twenty: Scrimmages and Pitch Management

Writer's picture: Kevin BhalodiaKevin Bhalodia

This past week, the first week of scrimmages began. With this in mind, and my final product coming more to fruition, I wanted to expand my train of thought. Throughout scrimmages, one of the most important parts of a baseball program is to keep pitcher's arms in check. A program can't throw out someone's arm right before tournament season begins. This is why, in correlation with baseball practice this week, I did research on the value of pitch counts, and how important the offseason is for pitchers to get their arm in shape. I also correlated knowledge I have of the MLB, and how important pitch counts are even at the most well-developed programs in the highest level of baseball in the world. There is a reason that broadcasting companies went out of their way to add pitch counts to the ever-changing graphics that we see today. I also assessed some ethical concerns that baseball has today, and why the issue of Tommy John increases is the result of an understandable stalemate between doctors and baseball players looking to constantly increase their velocity. But, ultimately, I am very excited for this incoming baseball season, especially since last year was cancelled due to COVID.
