This past weekend, I conducted my first research interview with Dr. John Barrington, an orthopedic surgeon who is very well-versed into what he does, having been in the medical field with 15 years of schooling and has been working both locally and internationally for over 14 years. In addition, I have known him personally for a very long time as a great and friendly character. Both of these notions I had were upheld in the interview that we had, giving great insight on various issues seen in both sports and daily lifestyle. We touched on topics such as the impact of COVID-19 on his practice in addition to the effect that modernization of countries has led to a major obesity problem being seen not only in the United States but also beyond in various continents such as Southern Asia and Latin America, the latter he has done major charity work in. From these questions, I was able to understand more greatly about the current state of orthopedics in a sports medicine perspective. In addition, we also conversed about how he feels about the future of orthopedics, to which he responded that patients in the past 5 years are now at a greater chance to go home the same day surgery was performed than ever before. This paralleled the finding that I saw with IR. To continue my journey, I will build upon what I learned from Dr. Barrington with my research interviews that I hope to be more direct with the sports medicine field.
